"E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," a 1982 American science fiction film directed and produced by Steven Spielberg and written by Melissa Mathison, follows the story of Elliott, a young boy who befriends an alien called E.T. left behind on Earth. Alongside his friends and family, Elliott endeavors to help E.T. return home. The movie features Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Peter Coyote, Robert MacNaughton, and Drew Barrymore in key roles.

The film's inception came from Spielberg's creation of an imaginary friend post his parents' divorce. Spielberg and Mathison reconceived the story from their earlier project "Night Skies" in 1980. Mathison completed the initial script, titled "E.T. and Me," in under two months, which underwent two revisions. Initially rejected by Columbia Pictures due to doubts about its commercial viability, Universal Pictures acquired the script for $1 million. Filming occurred from September to December 1981 with a budget of $10.5 million, employing animatronics designed by Carlo Rambaldi.

"E.T." premiered as the closing film at the Cannes Film Festival on May 26, 1982, and debuted in the United States on June 11, 1982. It became a colossal success at the box office, surpassing "Star Wars" to become the highest-grossing film of all time, holding the record for eleven years until Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" in 1993. Critically acclaimed, "E.T." is considered one of the greatest films ever made, garnering nine Academy Award nominations and winning four, including Best Original Score and Best Visual Effects. It also secured multiple Saturn Awards and Golden Globe Awards. The film underwent re-releases in 1985 and 2002 for its 20th anniversary, featuring altered scenes and visual effects. Additionally, it was re-released in IMAX in 2022 for its 40th anniversary. In 1994, "E.T." was added to the United States National Film Registry for its cultural and historical significance.
